Location:
Jawa, Sarawal Gaunpalika, Nawalparasi. The Gaunpalika has declared this area as the ancient Kakarpatta City.
Historical Significance:
This site is of great importance to Buddhists due to its connection with Lord Buddha. Buddha visited the city and was met by the city’s chief, Dīrghajānu.
Teachings of Buddha:
Dīrghajānu requested Buddha to guide householders on the path to liberation. In response, Buddha delivered significant teachings known as the Dīrghajānu Sutta. He taught about two kinds of happiness: worldly and divine.
Worldly Happiness:
To achieve worldly happiness, Buddha outlined four principles:
- Rising Wealth: Achieving through hard work.
- Preservation of Wealth: Protecting one’s earnings.
- Good Friendship: Maintaining good relationships.
- Balanced Livelihood: Earning a balanced living.
Divine Happiness:
For divine happiness, Buddha emphasized four qualities:
- Moral Conduct: Ethical behavior.
- Faith: Belief.
- Generosity: Altruism.
- Wisdom: Intelligence.
Cultural Heritage:
The garden includes ancient Kola (Alangium salviifolium) trees reflecting the history of the Koliya Republic. There is also an old lotus pond.
Conservation Efforts:
The Gaunpalika is working to preserve the ancient artifacts and heritage of this area. Efforts are focused on maintaining and showcasing the site’s historical and cultural significance.
